Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- ¼ cup brown sugar (for topping)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar (for topping)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
- 1 cup boiling water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Grease a 20×20 cm (8×8 inch) baking dish with butter or oil spray.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Add milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Stir until smooth but do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared dish and spread evenly.
- In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.
- Slowly pour 1 cup of boiling water over the top without stirring.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center bubbles gently.
- Let cool for 10–15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with optional vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
You can add diced apples, pears, or berries for a fruity twist.
For a crunchier topping, sprinkle chopped nuts before baking.
To reheat, warm in the oven at 150°C (300°F) for 10 minutes.
