Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Grease a 20×20 cm (8×8 inch) baking dish with butter or oil spray.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. Add milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Stir until smooth but do not overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared dish and spread evenly.
  6. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.
  7. Slowly pour 1 cup of boiling water over the top without stirring.
  8. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center bubbles gently.
  9. Let cool for 10–15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with optional vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

You can add diced apples, pears, or berries for a fruity twist.

For a crunchier topping, sprinkle chopped nuts before baking.

To reheat, warm in the oven at 150°C (300°F) for 10 minutes.
