Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large yellow onions, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- Oil for frying (or cooking spray for baking)
Instructions
- Peel the onions and cut them into bite-sized chunks.
- In a bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.
- In another bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg until smooth.
- Dip each onion piece into the buttermilk mixture, fully coating it.
- Dredge the coated piece in the flour mixture, ensuring complete coverage.
- Repeat the dipping and dredging process for a double coating.
- For frying: heat oil to 180°C (350°F). Fry onions in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towels.
- For baking: preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Place coated onions on a greased baking sheet, lightly spray with oil, and bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Notes
For extra crispiness, double coat the onions.
Adjust cayenne pepper to control the spice level.
Baking is a healthier alternative to frying.
Serve with your choice of dipping sauces.
