Bite-Sized Blooming Onions are a fun, crispy appetizer perfect for sharing. These golden, flavorful onion pieces are coated in a seasoned batter and either fried or baked for a satisfying crunch. Ideal for parties or snacks, they bring a tasty twist to the classic blooming onion.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying (or cooking spray for baking)

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and cut them into bite-sized chunks.
  2. In a bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg until smooth.
  4. Dip each onion piece into the buttermilk mixture, fully coating it.
  5. Dredge the coated piece in the flour mixture, ensuring complete coverage.
  6. Repeat the dipping and dredging process for a double coating.
  7. For frying: heat oil to 180°C (350°F). Fry onions in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towels.
  8. For baking: preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Place coated onions on a greased baking sheet, lightly spray with oil, and bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Notes

For extra crispiness, double coat the onions.

Adjust cayenne pepper to control the spice level.

Baking is a healthier alternative to frying.

Serve with your choice of dipping sauces.
