  • Total Time: 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Yield: 10 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
  • Optional: 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp dried herbs, or fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5–7 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Pour in olive oil or melted butter, then mix until a rough dough forms.
  3. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes by hand or 5–6 minutes with a stand mixer until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 45–60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  5. While the dough rises, shred your cheese. If desired, mix cheese with garlic powder or herbs.
  6. Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it into a rectangle. Spread cheese evenly, leaving a small border around the edges.
  7. Roll the dough tightly from one long side to the other, sealing the seam. For a twist loaf, slice lengthwise, twist the halves, and place in a loaf pan.
  8. Transfer to a greased loaf pan or lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise for 20–30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Brush dough with olive oil or melted butter. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and the cheese is bubbling.
  10. Let cool for 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.

Notes

You can use a blend of cheeses for deeper flavor.

Add chopped cooked turkey bacon or chicken ham for a protein boost.

Fresh herbs can be kneaded into the dough or sprinkled on top before baking.

For extra flavor, brush with garlic butter after baking.
