Ingredients
- 4 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
- 2 tablespoons butter (softened)
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Optional toppings: fresh herbs (parsley, chives), chicken ham, or turkey bacon
Instructions
- Gather all ingredients and keep them ready for easy cooking.
- Lightly spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Place the slices butter-side down.
- Using the back of a spoon, press the center of the bread to create a shallow well.
- Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place bread slices in the skillet, butter-side down.
- Crack one egg into the center of each slice. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Add shredded cheese generously around the bread edges and lightly over the egg.
- If desired, sprinkle chicken ham, turkey bacon, or fresh herbs on top of the cheese.
- Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the egg is set and the cheese melts.
- Remove the lid and let the underside crisp for 1 more minute.
- Lift the toast carefully with a spatula and serve warm.
Notes
For softer yolks, reduce cooking time slightly.
For firmer eggs, cook 1 to 2 minutes longer.
Customize with vegetables such as spinach, bell peppers, or tomatoes for added nutrition.
