Ingredients
- 9 cups Rice Chex cereal (or similar square cereal)
- 2 cups white chocolate chips
- 1 packet strawberry gelatin mix
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup crushed shortbread cookies
- Optional: sprinkles or freeze-dried strawberry pieces
Instructions
- Measure 9 cups of cereal into a large mixing bowl and set aside.
- Place the white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20–30 second intervals, stirring after each one, until fully melted and smooth. Do not overheat. Alternatively, melt using a double-boiler.
- Stir the strawberry gelatin mix into the melted chocolate until evenly blended. The coating should be smooth, with a pink hue and fruity flavor.
- Pour the melted mixture over the cereal. Use a spatula to gently fold until every piece of cereal is completely coated. Work slowly to avoid crushing the cereal.
- Transfer the coated cereal into a large resealable plastic bag. Add the powdered sugar, seal tightly, and shake until all pieces are covered in a light, even dusting.
- Crush the shortbread cookies into fine crumbs. Sprinkle them over the sugar-coated cereal and mix gently to combine. This creates the shortcake effect.
- If desired, add festive sprinkles or freeze-dried strawberry pieces. Mix carefully to distribute them without breaking the coated cereal.
- Spread the mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Allow it to cool and set for 15–20 minutes until the coating hardens.
- Once firm, transfer the muddy buddies into an airtight container for storage or divide them into smaller bags for sharing.
Notes
Always ensure utensils and bowls are completely dry before melting chocolate to prevent seizing.
For a natural alternative, replace gelatin with powdered freeze-dried strawberries.
This recipe is great for gifting when packed in decorative bags or jars.
