Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Red food coloring
- 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened (for marbling swirl)
Instructions
- Preheat Waffle Iron: Prepare your waffle iron by preheating and lightly greasing it with butter or nonstick spray.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until evenly mixed.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat eggs lightly. Add buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.
- Make Red Velvet Batter: Gradually fold the wet ingredients into the dry mixture until smooth. Add red food coloring to achieve the desired shade.
- Prepare Cream Cheese Swirl: Beat the cream cheese in a small bowl until smooth. Add sugar if a sweeter swirl is desired.
- Create Marble Effect: In the waffle bowl, alternate spoonfuls of red velvet batter and cream cheese. Gently swirl with a skewer or knife to create marbled patterns. Avoid overmixing.
- Cook Waffles: Pour marbled batter into the preheated waffle iron. Close lid and cook 4–6 minutes or until waffles are golden and cooked through.
- Serve or Cool: Carefully remove waffles and place on a wire rack or serve immediately. Top with your favorite syrup, fresh fruits, or whipped cream.
Notes
Do not overmix the batter when swirling; the distinct marble pattern is key.
For extra crispiness, allow waffles to cool slightly on a wire rack.
Batter can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
