This Gourmet Blueberry Grilled Cheese brings together the perfect balance of sweet blueberries and melted cheese, layered between crisp, buttery bread. It is simple, quick, and versatile enough to serve as a light meal or as a creative appetizer for gatherings.

  • Total Time: 13 minutes
  • Yield: 1 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
  • 1 tablespoon softened butter
  • ½ cup fresh blueberries (or thawed frozen blueberries, drained)
  • 23 slices of cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, brie, or a mix)
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • Fresh basil or thyme leaves (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Place the two slices of bread on a cutting board. Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice.
  2. Rinse the blueberries and pat them dry. Lightly mash half of them with a fork, leaving the rest whole for texture.
  3. Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, onto a clean surface. Add a layer of cheese slices or shredded cheese.
  4. Spoon the blueberries evenly over the cheese. If using, drizzle honey or maple syrup lightly over the berries.
  5. Sprinkle fresh basil or thyme if you want a herbal note.
  6. Add another light layer of cheese on top of the blueberries. This will help hold the filling together.
  7. Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing outward. Press down gently to secure the sandwich.
  8. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwich into the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes on one side until golden brown.
  9. Flip the sandwich carefully and cook the other side for another 3–4 minutes, pressing lightly with a spatula to ensure even browning.
  10. Remove from the skillet and let the sandwich rest for one minute. Slice diagonally with a sharp knife and serve warm.

Notes

For best results, avoid overfilling with blueberries to keep the sandwich intact.

Mixing two types of cheese often enhances both flavor and texture.

If you prefer a sweeter version, use cream cheese as the base layer before adding blueberries.
