Tennessee Peach Pudding is a traditional southern dessert that combines juicy peaches with a soft cake-like topping and a rich syrup that forms during baking. It is simple to prepare, budget-friendly, and always a crowd favorite.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 8 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh peaches, peeled and sliced (or canned/frozen peaches, drained and thawed)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for syrup)
  • 1 cup hot water
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Butter a medium baking dish.
  2. Arrange sliced peaches evenly in the prepared baking dish. If using canned peaches, drain them first.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir well.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together melted butter and milk. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture. Stir until smooth.
  5. Spread the batter evenly over the peaches in the dish. Leave some slices partly visible.
  6. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup granulated sugar, and 1 cup hot water. Heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring often.
  7. Pour the hot syrup carefully over the batter and peaches in the dish. Do not stir.
  8. Place the dish on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and firm.
  9. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes. The sauce will settle at the bottom.
  10. Serve warm with ice cream, whipped cream, or on its own.

Notes

Cinnamon or nutmeg can be added for a spiced flavor.

Use peach juice instead of part of the water in the syrup for extra richness.

For a lighter version, reduce sugar slightly.
