  • Total Time: 27 minutes
  • Yield: 24 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, orange zest, and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and poppy seeds.
  5. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a soft dough forms.
  6. Stir in the orange juice to add moisture and flavor.
  7. Using a tablespoon or small cookie scoop, form dough balls and place them 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets.
  8. Gently flatten each ball slightly with the back of a spoon or your fingers.
  9. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden and centers remain soft.
  10. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Use room-temperature butter and egg for smooth mixing.

Fresh orange zest and juice deliver the best flavor.

For extra sweetness, drizzle with orange glaze or dust with powdered sugar.

Dough can be refrigerated for up to 48 hours before baking.
