Shirred Eggs are a classic baked egg dish made with simple ingredients like eggs, cream, and cheese. They are baked in individual ramekins until the whites are set and the yolks remain creamy. Elegant yet easy, this recipe works beautifully for breakfast, brunch, or a light dinner.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 fresh eggs
  • 4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for greasing)
  • 4 tablespoons grated cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or gruyère)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: diced turkey bacon, sliced chicken ham, sautéed mushrooms, spinach, or fresh herbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Lightly butter four ovenproof ramekins to prevent sticking and add richness.
  3. Place the ramekins on a baking tray for easy handling.
  4. Pour 1 tablespoon of cream or milk into the bottom of each ramekin. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  5. Crack one egg into each ramekin, keeping the yolks intact.
  6. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of grated cheese over each egg.
  7. Add optional extras, such as cooked turkey bacon, chicken ham, mushrooms, or spinach. Spread them evenly over the eggs.
  8. Place the tray with the ramekins into the preheated oven.
  9. Bake for 12–15 minutes, depending on how runny or firm you want the yolks.
  10. Remove the ramekins carefully from the oven and allow them to rest for 1 minute.
  11. Garnish with fresh herbs such as parsley, thyme, or chives.
  12. Serve immediately with toast, bread, or a light salad.

Notes

Use whole milk instead of cream for a lighter version.

Customize by mixing cheeses for added flavor.

Watch the eggs closely toward the end of baking to achieve the desired doneness.

Serve directly in the ramekins for a beautiful presentation.
