  • Total Time: 42 minutes
  • Yield: 12 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (one packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or shredded cheese

Instructions

  1. Pour warm milk into a bowl, add sugar, and sprinkle yeast on top. Let it sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add softened butter, egg, and yeast mixture. Mix until dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Shape dough into a ball, place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1 ½ hours until doubled.
  5. Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal portions. Roll each into a smooth ball. Arrange on a parchment-lined tray.
  6. Cover loosely and let rolls rise 30–40 minutes until puffy.
  7. Brush tops with milk or beaten egg and sprinkle optional toppings.
  8. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 18–22 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Dough can be prepared ahead and refrigerated after the first rise.

Rolls freeze well; thaw and warm before serving.

Optional herbs like rosemary or thyme can be added to the dough for extra flavor.
