- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 egg yolks, room temperature
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch, sifted
- 1 tablespoon agar-agar powder
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour and ½ cup of unsalted butter, cutting them together with a pastry cutter until they resemble coarse crumbs.
- Add 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar and mix well.
- Press this mixture firmly into a greased rectangular baking dish and bake for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
- Set aside to cool.
- In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine 2 cups of whole milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- In another bowl, whisk together 4 egg yolks, ¼ cup of granulated sugar, ¼ cup of cornstarch, and 1 tablespoon of agar-agar powder until smooth.
- Gradually pour in the warm milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking constantly to avoid cooking the eggs.
- Return the combined mixture back into the saucepan over medium heat.
- Stir continuously as it heats up until it thickens into a pudding-like consistency—this should take about 5-7 minutes.
- Once thickened, remove from heat and let it cool slightly before pouring over your cooled pastry base.
- Cover your baking dish with plastic wrap once you've poured in the custard layer.
- Place it in the refrigerator for at least two hours or until completely set.
- After chilling, slice your Classic Vanilla Slice into squares or rectangles using a sharp knife dipped in hot water (for clean cuts!).
- Garnish with powdered sugar or fresh berries if you're feeling fancy.
- Serve immediately to enjoy all those delightful layers!
