Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large onion, sweet variety preferred
- 1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 cup buttermilk or plant-based milk with vinegar
- Dipping sauce of your choice
Instructions
- Peel the outer layers of the large onion.
- Place the onion root side up on a cutting board and make four vertical cuts down toward the center without slicing all the way through.
- Rotate the onion and repeat until you’ve created petal-like sections.
- In a bowl, mix together buttermilk (or plant-based milk with vinegar) and allow your onion to soak in this mixture for at least 30 minutes.
- In another bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, cornstarch, and spices until well combined.
- Once soaked, carefully lift your onion from the buttermilk mixture, letting any excess drip off.
- Dredge each petal in the seasoned flour mixture until thoroughly coated.
- Heat oil in a deep pot until hot enough (around 350°F) for frying.
- Gently lower your coated onion into the oil using tongs or a slotted spoon.
- Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crunchy.
- Remove from oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Garnish with fresh herbs if desired and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
