Delicious char siu chicken recipe with detailed instructions and nutritional information.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 chicken thighs
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon five-spice powder
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup honey, 1 tablespoon five-spice powder, 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 tablespoon grated ginger, and 1/2 cup pineapple juice. Whisk these ingredients together until smooth.
  2. Add four chicken thighs into the marinade, ensuring they’re well coated.
  3. Cover it with plastic wrap and let it marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours (or overnight if you’re feeling indulgent).
  4. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  5. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper and place a wire rack on top of this sheet.
  6. Remove the chicken from the marinade and place them on your wire rack.
  7. Bake in your preheated oven for about 25 minutes until they start looking golden brown.
  8. Halfway through cooking—at about 12 minutes—brush some reserved marinade over each piece for an extra layer of flavor.
  9. Once baked, switch your oven setting to broil.
  10. Broil your chicken thighs for an additional 3-5 minutes until they develop crispy edges and deep caramelization.
  11. Remove from the oven and let them rest for about five minutes before slicing.
  12. Serve garnished with fresh green onions or sesame seeds if you like.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container.

Reheat gently to maintain tenderness.

Serve with steamed rice and vegetables.

Marinate chicken longer for deeper flavor.
