  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef, lean
  • 2 large sweet onions, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup beef broth, low-sodium if desired
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Provolone or mozzarella cheese, to taste
  • Sturdy hamburger buns or brioche rolls

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  2. Once hot, toss in 2 large sliced sweet onions.
  3. Cook these until they're golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Once the onions are caramelized, add 2 cloves of minced garlic and 1 pound of ground beef to the skillet.
  5. Break up the beef using a wooden spoon and cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes.
  6. Stir in ½ cup of beef broth and 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce.
  7. Mix well and let it simmer for another 5 minutes until everything is heated through and slightly thickened.
  8. While the filling simmers, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Split open your buns and place them on a baking sheet.
  10. Spoon generous portions of the savory meat mixture onto each bottom half of the buns.
  11. Top each one with slices of provolone or mozzarella cheese.
  12. Pop those into your preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container.

Reheat gently on the stovetop.

Serve on toasted garlic bread.

Add extra cheese for richness.
